Midlands Art Centre (The MAC)
The Mac’s new Music and Dance studio is readying itself to open its doors in anticipation of a more normal year. Located within the leafy Cannon Hill Park in Edgbaston, Birmingham, the new building presents itself as an angular unfolding box which sits against the backdrop of the adjacent circular amphitheatre and the main building. The design, with its large asymmetrical cantilevered canopies, has fully glazed ends which open out onto the new accessible sensory garden. Key to realising the exciting proposals was to translate the concept into a buildable form. The complex folded roof geometry and abnormal acoustic requirements were resolved collaboratively with the team through 3D modelling.
The new sensory garden blurs the boundaries between the new building and the more public park space beyond. The garden is afforded privacy with a specially commissioned sculptural fence whose design calls on the surrounding landscape for inspiration. Integral timber benches have been installed between the multi coloured and fragrant plant specimens which provides external usable space in addition to the studio.
